To use, enter the amount of essential oil & alcohol to make a flavour essence, then the amount of essence to syrup to make a cordials and then cordial to water in the relevant boxes to see how strong your drink is likely to be.

How much simple syrup you have.

Approximate strength 75 ppm Decent to strong

  1. 0–50 weak to decent
  2. 50–150 decent to strong
  3. 150–200 strong to too strong
  4. 200+ much too strong

As a rough guide, 0-50 is weak to decent. 50-150 is decent to strong. 150-200 is strong to too strong. 200+ is much too strong. Aim to keep your PPM total to below 180 as a general rule.

This calculator is intended as a very rough guide to how strong your drink is likely to be when using essential oils.

It is not 100% accurate for all oils and should not be used as a foolproof guide to usage levels, but as a guide only - it has a ~10-15% error margin as not all essential oils have the same mass to volume ratio.

This assumes you are adding essential oils to alcohol to make a flavour essence, then adding some of that essence to a simple syrup to make a cordial, then adding some of the cordial to water to make a drink.

It has been pre-filled with values that should give you a great flavoured drink, but you can edit any of them (aside from the PPM value at the bottom) to recalculate the totals.

Essential Oil (ml): how much essential oil in total will be in your essence (alcohol + oil).

Essence total volume (ml): the total volume of oil + alcohol in your essence.

Essence for syrup (ml): how much essence you add to your simple syrup.

Syrup volume (ml): how much simple syrup you have.

Syrup in drink (ml): how much cordial you are adding to a drink.

Drink volume (ml): the final amount of drink (cordial + water).
